How to Find the Project Area in Unity

In Unity, the Project area is usually located along the bottom of the Unity Editor.

What Does the Project Area Show?

The Project window shows the files and assets that belong to your Unity project.

Think of the Project window as the file manager for your game.

You may see folders such as:

Example Project Structure

A beginner 2D Unity project might be organized like this:

Assets
├── Scenes
├── Scripts
├── Sprites
├── Materials
└── Audio

What Can You Do in the Project Area?

You can use the Project window to:

If You Cannot Find the Project Window

If the Project window is missing, open it from the Unity menu.

The Project window should then appear in the Unity Editor.

Creating a Folder in the Project Area

You can create folders to keep your game organized.

  1. Open the Project window.
  2. Select the Assets folder.
  3. Right-click in an empty area.
  4. Select Create → Folder.
  5. Enter a name for the folder.

For example, you could create:

Scenes
Scripts
Sprites
Audio
Materials
Prefabs

Example: Finding a C# Script

If you create a script called:

It might appear in the Project window like this:

Assets
└── Scripts
    └── PlayerController.cs

Attaching a Script to a GameObject

You can drag a script from the Project window onto a GameObject.

For example:

  1. Find PlayerController.cs in the Project window.
  2. Find Player in the Hierarchy.
  3. Drag PlayerController.cs onto the Player.

The script will then become a component of the Player.

How the Main Unity Areas Work Together

Hierarchy = Objects in the current Scene

Inspector = Settings and components for the selected object

Project = Files and assets for the entire game

Easy Way to Remember

Project = Your game's files

If you are looking for a script, image, sound, Scene, or Prefab, the Project window is usually where you will find it.
