How to Find the Inspector Area in Unity

In Unity, the Inspector area is usually located on the right side of the Unity Editor.

What Does the Inspector Show?

The Inspector displays the properties and components of the GameObject that you currently have selected.

For example, if you click Player in the Hierarchy, the Inspector may show:

What Can You Change in the Inspector?

You can use the Inspector to change:

If You Cannot Find the Inspector Window

If the Inspector window is missing, open it from the Unity menu.

Select:

The Inspector window should then appear in the Unity Editor.

How the Hierarchy and Inspector Work Together

A common Unity workflow is:

  1. Select a GameObject in the Hierarchy.
  2. Look at the Inspector.
  3. Find the component you want to change.
  4. Change the object's settings.
Easy way to remember:

Hierarchy = Select the object

Inspector = Change the object

Example: Move the Player

Suppose you want to move the Player to a specific location.

  1. Click Player in the Hierarchy.
  2. Look at the Inspector.
  3. Find the Transform component.
  4. Locate the Position values.
  5. Enter the following:
X = 0
Y = 2
Z = 0

The Player will move to that position in the Scene.

Important Transform Properties

Position

Controls where the GameObject is located.

Rotation

Controls the direction or angle of the GameObject.

Scale

Controls the size of the GameObject.

Example Player Inspector

A Player in a simple 2D game might have the following components:

Player

Transform
Sprite Renderer
Rigidbody 2D
Box Collider 2D
PlayerController

Each component gives the Player different properties or abilities.

Remember:

The Hierarchy tells Unity which object you want to work with.

The Inspector allows you to view and change that object's settings.
