Student Handout: How to Record Audio on a Chromebook
Goal: Learn how to record your voice using a Chromebook microphone.
Method 1: Use the Recorder App
- Click the Launcher in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
- Open the Recorder app.
- Click Start recording.
- Speak clearly into your Chromebook microphone.
- Click Stop recording when you are done.
Tip: Speak in a quiet place so your recording is easier to hear.
If the Microphone Does Not Work
Check your Chromebook settings:
- Click the time in the bottom-right corner.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Privacy and security.
- Click Privacy controls.
- Make sure Microphone access is turned on.
Important: Some Chromebooks may also have a physical microphone switch. Make sure it is turned on.
If You Are Using a Website
If you are recording through a website instead of the Recorder app, Chrome may ask for permission to use your microphone.
- Click Allow if Chrome asks to use the microphone.
- If you clicked Block by mistake, go into Chrome settings and allow microphone access.
If Your Chromebook Does Not Have the Recorder App
Some Chromebooks may not include the Recorder app. If that happens, you can:
- Use a web-based voice recorder
- Use a Chrome extension that records audio
- Ask your teacher for another approved recording tool
