Lesson Plan: Resizing JPG Images to Specific File Sizes Using Free Online Software
Grade Level:
High School
Subject:
Computer Science
Duration:
1-2 class periods
Objective:
Students will learn how to resize the images
Materials Needed:
- Computers with internet access.
- Free online image editing software such as:
- Pixlr (https://pixlr.com)
- ILoveIMG (https://www.iloveimg.com/)
- TinyJPG (https://tinyjpg.com/)
- Photopea (https://www.photopea.com/)
- ResizeImage.net (https://resizeimage.net/)
- Review you seat number. Click on the link below for your image.
Instructions:
Step 1: Select an Image
1. Students will select an image associated with their seat number. See above
2. Download or choose a high-quality JPG image related to the seat number from free image sources such as Unsplash, Pixabay, or Google Images.
Step 2: Choose an Online Tool
Students will use one of the following free online tools to resize their image:
- Pixlr: Use for both resizing and adding text to the image.
- ILoveIMG: Ideal for simple resizing.
- TinyJPG: Compresses the image to reduce file size.
- Photopea: Offers advanced image editing features, including text addition and resizing.
- ResizeImage.net: Provides specific resizing options by file size.
Step 3: Resizing the Image
Students must resize their image to specific target file sizes: 0.5 MB, 1 MB, 2 MB, 3 MB, 4 MB, 8 MB. Each image must be within 5% of the target size.
Instructions:
- Upload the Image: Go to the chosen online tool and upload the image.
- Adjust the Size: Use sliders, width/height dimensions, or quality settings to achieve the desired file size. Many tools will display the estimated file size as you adjust dimensions and quality.
- Check the File Size: Download the resized image and check its file size by right-clicking and viewing properties (ensure it’s within the 5% range of the target). Example: For a 2 MB target size, the file should be between 1.9 MB and 2.1 MB.
Step 4: Adding Text (Name, Period, Seat Number)
1. Add Text to the Image: Use the same tool or a different one to insert text on the image. Text should include: Your Name, Period Number, and Seat Number.
Ensure that the text is in a color that contrasts with the image and is easily readable. Example: If the background is dark, use light-colored text (like white or yellow), and if the background is light, use dark-colored text (like black or red).
Example Text Placement: "John Doe, Period 4, Seat 12"
Place the text in a corner or at a place that doesn’t obstruct the main image but remains visible.
Step 5: Submitting the Images
1. After resizing the image and adding text, save each version as a JPG file.
2. Submit all the resized images to google classroom.
Assessment:
- Resizing Accuracy (50%): Each image must be within 5% of the target file sizes (0.5 MB, 1 MB, 2 MB, 3 MB, 4 MB, 8 MB). Points will be deducted if the images are too far off the target size.
- Text Placement and Readability (50%): Name, period, and seat number must be clearly visible on the image with proper color contrast.
- Resize JPG images to specific file sizes within 5% of the target file sizes (0.5 MB, 1 MB, 2 MB, 3 MB, 4 MB, 8 MB).
- Use free online image editing software to resize images.
- Add text (their name, period number, and seat number) to the image in a readable color.
- Save and submit the resized image in JPG format.
- Your file names will be:
- PX_lastname_SizeOneHalfMB.jpg
- PX_lastname_SizeOneMB.jpg
- PX_lastname_SizeTwoMB.jpg
- PX_lastname_SizeThreeMB.jpg
- PX_lastname_SizeFourMB.jpg
- PX_lastname_SizeEightMB.jpg
- Drop them off into Google Classroom.
Additional Notes:
- Resizing Tips: Lowering image quality or reducing dimensions will help achieve smaller file sizes. For very large images, reduce the dimensions in half and adjust the quality until the desired file size is reached.
- Text Tips: Use simple, easy-to-read fonts like Arial or Times New Roman. Make sure the text size is large enough to be readable but not so large that it detracts from the image.
Example Timeline:
- Day 1: Select images, upload, and start resizing images to the target file sizes.
- Day 2: Finalize resizing, add text, check for quality and readability, and submit all images.
